Welcome to Border Stories Saturday!
Who is Dayani Cristal? is a movie by Gael García Bernal and Marc Silver premiering April 25. The US Border Patrol has found thousands migrants who have died in the desert, trying to cross into the America. Most are unidentifiable. One body found had no ID, but had a tattoo that said "Dayani Cristal"- and Gael Garcia Bernal takes off on the migrant trail, trying to retrace the steps this man took before he met his fate to the elements.
I don't have a lot to say about border deaths except that one is too many. I try not to be too political, because immigration reform won't affect my family- my husband can NEVER come back to the US. Period. But these deaths are needless. These are not "wetbacks" or "gardeners", these are actual people. We need to pay more attention to that aspect of immigration- the human aspect, and less on the political. Yes, laws are great, but creating more laws that hurt more families and violate the rights of more US citizens married to non-citizens is not the way to go. #Not1More death needs to happen. #Not1More deportation. #Not1More family broken in half.

- The Devil's Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea; the first book I ever read about border deaths. He follows a group of 26 migrants into the Arizona desert- more than half don't make it out.
